In this session, students will learn practical and safe ways to respond to uncomfortable situations. The session explores what it means to be an active bystander, why people sometimes hesitate to step in and how to recognise harassment or abuse in public paces. Students will learn practical and safe ways to respond to uncomfortable situations, including how to react to inappropriate comments, discriminatory language or behaviour that makes others feel unsafe.
This session will be presented by Dr. Anna James, a criminologist specialising in challenging behaviours and mental health issues. With experience in Higher Education, Further Education, and prisons, Anna aims to provide practical solutions that participants can take away and immediately implement.
Dr Anna James, joins us to help break it down to an open discussion where you’ll learn about what being an active bystander looks like.
Through discussion, realistic scenarios and reflection, participants will develop their own bystander approach, learning how to advocate for others in a way that feels authentic, responsible and safe.
Participants will be able to:
1. Recognise when to react and when to move yourself and others away.
2. Apply techniques to advocate for others.
3. Take away a bank of tools for being an active bystander.
This session is for everyone—whether you want to be a better ally, or just want to understand more about this issue. You’ll leave feeling more informed, more confident, and more empowered to handle difficult situations.
Remember, we've got you- if you have faced any experiences that you'd like to speak to somebody, plese don't hesitate to report it on our Report and Support.
